Each year, musicians from across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI come together under the direction of Maestros Lewis Dalvit and Hok Kwan to prepare for a fabulous night of music – The St. Andrews Arts Council Gala Festival Concert!
In 2017, a special tribute was paid to Canada 150 at the St. Andrews Arts Council’s 31st Gala Festival Concert, with the performance of a special arrangement of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” with words written by local musician, Ruth Dunfield and performed by symphony orchestra, community choir, International Aria competition winner and audience members. The concert was held in the auditorium of Sir James Dunn Academy in St. Andrews.
400+ members of the community of all ages and backgrounds joined together in a mass choir to participate in an emotional and inspiring musical experience in performing Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” with words celebrating Canada’s 150th accompanied by the Gala Festival Orchestra. The words, which were written by local songwriter, Ruth Dunfield provided participants with a deeper understanding about our connections in being Canadians and members of the St. Andrews community in this anniversary year. This project encouraged wide community participation in the 150 anniversary as everyone was welcome to be a part of a very powerful tribute to the strength of our communities and Canada.
